چکیده

This paper introduces a one-dimensional, partial integro-diierential model for bacterial aggregation. Integro-diierential equation is derived from a chemotactic partial diierential system, and stability and numerical analyses are applied to study pattern formation. We demonstrate that an interplay between positive and negative chemotaxis can generate both periodic patterns and aggregation. In the limit of slow diiusion we use a Lagrangian approach to derive a gradient system and analyze periodic peak-like patterns. We discuss the possibility of existence of other types of patterns, and the applicability of the model to the pattern formation in bacterial swarms, in particular the rippling phenomenon in Myxobacteria.

Modeling pattern formation with Boltzmann-like equation

We apply a single Boltzmann-like integro-diierential equation to model pattern formation in aspect space. Dynamics of density distributions are considered in two cases. First, the distribution of organisms on the real line is investigated. A linear stability analysis reveals conditions on interactions between the organisms that lead to aggregation and periodic patterns. Use of diiusion approxim...

GAME OF COORDINATION FOR BACTERIAL PATTERN FORMATION: A FINITE AUTOMATA MODELLING

In this paper, we use game theory to describe the emergence of self-organization and consequent pattern formation through communicative cooperation in Bacillus subtilis colonies. The emergence of cooperative regime is modelled as an n-player Assurance game, with the bacterial colonies as individual players. The game is played iteratively through cooperative communication, and mediated by exchan...

Modelling in microbiology

Mathematical models represent one end of a spectrum of activities designed to investigate natural phenomena. They attempt to simplify systems to uncover relationships which yield a consistent pattern when compared with in situ behaviour. Models can be continuous or discrete. Continuous models use families of differential or partial differential equations and are generally applied to large scale...

Solving a new bi-objective model for a cell formation problem considering labor allocation by multi-objective particle swarm optimization

Mathematical programming and artificial intelligence (AI) methods are known as the most effective and applicable procedures to form manufacturing cells in designing a cellular manufacturing system (CMS). In this paper, a bi-objective programming model is presented to consider the cell formation problem that is solved by a proposed multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO). The model c...

Optimal Order Spline Methods for Nonlinear Diierential and Integro-diierential Equations

In this work, we analyse new robust spline approximation methods for mth order boundary value problems described by nonlinear ordinary diierential and integro-diierential equations with m linear boundary conditions. Our main aim is to introduce a cost-eeective alternative to the highly successful orthogonal col-location method, and to prove stability and convergence properties similar to the or...
